AUCKLAND (PRN Online/Pacific Media Watch): The changing face of New Zealand means that the media needs to reflect more of the country's cultural diversity - particularly in Auckland, says Broadcasting Minister Trevor Mallard.

Speaking to Pacific Radio News last night at TVNZ's Journalism Diversity Scholarship, the minister stressed the shifting demographics.

The winner of a 2008 diversity scholarship was 17-year-old Murielle Baker of Ngapuhi descent, who came from Northland to receive her award. She'll have the three-year Bachelor of Communication Studies degree course at AUT University paid for.

The award was presented by the Broadcasting Minister.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Dr Michael Cullen, who spoke at the opening session of the World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference yesterday said it was "somewhat shameful" the state broadcaster TVNZ "relegated" programmes such as Te Karere to early in the afternoons - a decision that was made last year.
