William Nessen, who was jailed for 40 days in 2003 and expelled from the country again in 2005 for his coverage of Aceh's long-running separatist conflict, left Aceh on a flight for Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday afternoon, the Antara state news agency said. The journalist arrived on Sunday at the invitation of Aceh governor Irwandi Yusuf, who said he had checked with the immigration department and found that a ban on Nessen entering Indonesia had expired, Detikcom news website reported. "I'm upset. The government has misunderstood this. This issue (the deportation) is like a slap in the face from the government for me personally," Yusuf said. "He (Nessen) is clean. I checked one day before he arrived here. But at night, after he arrived, a letter arrived from Jakarta saying he was banned," he said. Nessen's troubles with Indonesian authorities stem from his 2003 arrest while covering Aceh's separatist conflict. He was detained for covering the conflict without government permission, with some military officers saying he was suspected of spying for the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Yusuf, himself a former GAM fighter, became Aceh's governor in a 2006 election following a peace deal signed with Jakarta. |
