Title -- 4289 TONGA: Times of Tonga ceases distribution in kingdom Date -- 4 February 2004 Byline -- None Origin -- Pacific Media Watch Source -- Radio NZ International/Countrywatch, 4/2/04 Copyright -- RNZI/CW Status -- Unabridged Post a comment on PMW's Right of Reply: www.voy.com/166636/ TIMES OF TONGA CEASES DISTRIBUTION IN KINGDOM http://www.countrywatch.com/@school/as_wire.asp?vCOUNTRY=172&UID=996598 NUKU'ALOFA (RNZI/Countrywatch/Pacific Media Watch): [FBIS Transcribed Text] Times of Tonga newspaper ceases distribution in kingdom] Text of report by Radio New Zealand International on 30 January The publisher of Taimi 'o Tonga [Times of Tonga], Kalafi Moala, says the paper will no longer be distributed in the kingdom. Moala says the confiscation of the Taimi earlier this year under recent media acts means Tongans living at home will no longer be able to read what has been described as the only independent media in the country. Moala says the last hope for the Taimi is an upcoming writ signed by 152 people, seeking a judicial review of the government's constitutional amendment and changes to media laws. [Moala] We do have a very strong distribution and strong presence of course in the Tongan communities outside of Tonga. And this year, for example, we are really setting up very strongly in the United States, whereby it has been only Hawaii where we've been distributing. [sentence as heard] But this year we are moving into San Francisco, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. |
